Do I need a light to use a gobo?
Yes — a gobo always requires a light fixture or projector to work.
A gobo itself is simply a stencil (usually made of metal or glass). It doesn’t produce light on its own. Instead, it must be placed inside a compatible light source—such as a stage lighting fixture or a dedicated gobo projector—so that light can pass through it and project the design onto a surface.
In practical terms, you need three things:
- A light fixture or gobo projector (this provides the beam of light)
- The gobo (the design or pattern)
- A holder or slot within the fixture to position the gobo correctly
Without a light source, the gobo cannot display anything—it’s like a stencil without paint.
